Here’s a quick plot recap of Lioness (also known as Special Ops: Lioness):

Plot Recap

Joe McNamara is a CIA station chief who leads the covert Lioness program—special operatives who go undercover by befriending the women in the lives of high-value terrorist targets to get close enough to eliminate them.

Cruz Manuelos is a Force Recon Marine with a difficult past: she fled an abusive relationship, then joined the Marines where she stands out for her toughness, intelligence, and aptitude. Joe recruits Cruz to become the newest Lioness operative after an earlier mission goes wrong.

For her first assignment, Cruz is tasked with getting close to Aaliyah Amrohi, daughter of terrorist financier Asmar Ali Amrohi. Cruz adopts a cover identity, enters Aaliyah's social world, and builds trust—while also dealing with her own emotions, moral conflicts, and the strain of betrayal that comes with living a lie.

At the end of Season 1, Cruz’s mission culminates at Aaliyah’s wedding in Mallorca. Ehsan, the groom, discovers Cruz’s real identity, leading to a violent confrontation. Cruz kills both him and Asmar Ali Amrohi. The mission is technically successful, but the cost is devastating: Cruz walks away psychologically shattered and severs ties with the team. Joe returns home to her family emotionally distant, haunted by how the mission compromised more than just strategy.

Ending explained (spoilers)

What happens at the end of Lioness?

Here’s how Lioness ends — both for Season 1 (2023) and Season 3 (the most recent ruling season), with full spoilers:

Season 1 Ending

  • Cruz Manuelos infiltrates Aaliyah Amrohi’s world as an undercover operative to reach Aaliyah’s father, billionaire financier and terrorist Asmar Ali Amrohi. During Aaliyah’s wedding in Mallorca, Cruz is discovered by Aaliyah’s fiancé Ehsan, whom she ends up killing. She then kills Amrohi in a kitchen during the wedding festivities. - After the kill, Cruz activates her emergency beacon and fights through guards to escape; Joe McNamara and the rest of the team extract her. - The operation is technically declared a success, but Cruz is emotionally shattered. She confronts Joe, accusing her of turning Cruz into a weapon, highlighting that though the mission succeeded on paper, it emotionally destroyed Aaliyah and Cruz herself. Disgusted, Cruz quits the Lioness program. - Joe, haunted by what the mission cost in lives, trust, and moral compromise, returns to her home and family — but she’s changed and deeply unsettled.

Season 3 Finale (“The Unraveling”) Ending

  • Throughout Season 3, Joe has been trying to uncover who ordered her abduction. Initial suspects include Russia, Iran, or contractor networks. Clues and whispers trace back through intermediaries, but none provide a full picture. - In the final episode, the true architect is revealed: Aaliyah Amrohi. She financed Joe’s kidnapping, returning as the show’s key antagonist behind multiple layers of conspiracy. - Joe survives the rescue attempt but loses the only thing she’d been fighting to protect (her family life / personal peace). With the revelation of betrayal, her professional and personal worlds both bleed — relationships frayed, trust broken, and her equilibrium shattered. She’s no longer just battling external enemies; she’s left reeling from what’s been done in her name.

Both endings emphasize that even “successful” missions leave behind moral wreckage, emotional trauma, and long-lasting consequences that can’t be undone.
