The ending of Futurama is bittersweet—part happy, part sad.
What Happens in the Official Finale (“Meanwhile,” aired September 4, 2013):
- Fry proposes to Leela, but in trying to perfect the moment, he misuses Professor Farnsworth’s invention that rewinds time by ten seconds. - After things go awry, Fry ends up breaking the device, which causes time to freeze everywhere except for him and Leela. - The two are left to wander in a motionless world, alone together. They grow old, marry themselves, and live out what seems to be decades of life together—completely in each other’s company. - Eventually, Professor Farnsworth restores time by fixing the device, but doing so erases Fry and Leela’s memories of their years together. Even so, they decide to go back in time and choose to press the button again, embracing the possibility of now-lost shared life and hope for the future.
How It Feels:
