Buddy is a 2026 horror-thriller that twists the nostalgia of a 1990s kids’ show into a nightmarish trap of reality and control.
In 1999, four children—Freddy, Josh, Oliver, and Wade—perform on the set of It’s Buddy!, a cheerful TV show hosted by Buddy, a giant orange unicorn mascot who teaches lessons and ends each episode with group hugs and a musical number. When Josh refuses to take part in a dance segment, Buddy reacts violently, sending him on a supposed journey to the mythical “Diamond City.” Josh vanishes; his friends grow suspicious after discovering his bloodied book and seeing Buddy’s darker side emerge. As tension escalates, Buddy kills some of the adult puppet or object cast members, and the children plot an escape through underground tunnels, attempting to outwit the beast through music Buddy hates and alliances with defectors like Willie the dummy and George the cowboy puppet—both of whom meet gruesome ends.
Simultaneously, Grace, a suburban mother, senses something missing at home—an empty chair, a memory gap. She grows haunted by It’s Buddy! appearing unexpectedly on screens and begins to unravel when it's revealed she once had another child. She becomes linked to the show via supernatural means, eventually pulled into Buddy’s distorted reality, where she realizes that Freddy is her long-lost daughter. Grace sacrifices herself to help Freddy and her friends escape.
In the finale, Freddy confronts Buddy—who has transformed into a monstrous “Dark Buddy”—sings the forbidden song, and instigates chaos. Buddy is impaled on a mailbox by Strappy, the talking backpack, allowing Freddy to slip through a portal back to a suburban living room. Though rescued from immediate terror, she finds the ordinary world fractured—real and inanimate friends have reverted back, and it’s unclear if Grace is still alive. The ending suggests escape at great cost, with lingering mysteries about Buddy’s origin and the nature of the world he rules.
