Plot recap

Give me a quick plot recap of Buddy

Buddy is a 2026 horror-thriller that twists the nostalgia of a 1990s kids’ show into a nightmarish trap of reality and control.

In 1999, four children—Freddy, Josh, Oliver, and Wade—perform on the set of It’s Buddy!, a cheerful TV show hosted by Buddy, a giant orange unicorn mascot who teaches lessons and ends each episode with group hugs and a musical number. When Josh refuses to take part in a dance segment, Buddy reacts violently, sending him on a supposed journey to the mythical “Diamond City.” Josh vanishes; his friends grow suspicious after discovering his bloodied book and seeing Buddy’s darker side emerge. As tension escalates, Buddy kills some of the adult puppet or object cast members, and the children plot an escape through underground tunnels, attempting to outwit the beast through music Buddy hates and alliances with defectors like Willie the dummy and George the cowboy puppet—both of whom meet gruesome ends.

Simultaneously, Grace, a suburban mother, senses something missing at home—an empty chair, a memory gap. She grows haunted by It’s Buddy! appearing unexpectedly on screens and begins to unravel when it's revealed she once had another child. She becomes linked to the show via supernatural means, eventually pulled into Buddy’s distorted reality, where she realizes that Freddy is her long-lost daughter. Grace sacrifices herself to help Freddy and her friends escape.

In the finale, Freddy confronts Buddy—who has transformed into a monstrous “Dark Buddy”—sings the forbidden song, and instigates chaos. Buddy is impaled on a mailbox by Strappy, the talking backpack, allowing Freddy to slip through a portal back to a suburban living room. Though rescued from immediate terror, she finds the ordinary world fractured—real and inanimate friends have reverted back, and it’s unclear if Grace is still alive. The ending suggests escape at great cost, with lingering mysteries about Buddy’s origin and the nature of the world he rules.

Ending explained (spoilers)

What happens at the end of Buddy?

Here’s what happens at the end of Buddy (2026)—Heavy spoilers ahead:

Final Moments & Escape

  • Freddy narrowly escapes Buddy’s twisted TV world. - During their final confrontation, Strappy (the longtime friend and magical backpack) trips Buddy, causing the unicorn to be impaled on a mailbox. This kills Buddy. - Just before dying, Buddy addresses Freddy with his final word: “Bitch.”
  • Freddy then makes her way to a creepy room filled with televisions—each one showing a different real-world home where a child watches Buddy’s show.

After the Breakthrough

  • Freddy steps through one of the screens, expecting to return to her own family. Instead, she appears in the living room of a random (Spanish-speaking) family. Everything magical or sentient from Buddy’s world—like Strappy and Mr. Mailbox—suddenly become ordinary, lifeless objects.

What’s Left Behind & What’s Unresolved

  • Freddy’s mother, Grace, is confirmed dead (or at least sacrificed) after venturing into the well in an attempt to rescue Freddy—and never returns. - Several other children are killed during Buddy’s rampage. - Strappy and Mr. Mailbox escape along with Freddy, but both lose their magical life once outside the TV world—they’re reduced to normal objects. - A chained yellow unicorn is shown, implying that Buddy’s realm—or versions of it—still persists and that the cycle isn’t fully broken.

Overall Take

Freddy’s escape is bittersweet. She’s free, but at a tremendous cost: family is lost, magical allies are dead or stripped of their magic, and the malign world behind It’s Buddy! is far from defeated. The ending leaves lingering dread, suggesting that Freddy has survived the worst—but many questions remain unanswered, and Buddy’s system may still be actively preying on new victims.
