Ryland Grace is the protagonist of Project Hail Mary. He wakes up alone on a spacecraft called the Hail Mary with amnesia. His memory loss is initially unexplained but is linked to the trauma and stress of his critical mission: to save Earth from extinction caused by Astrophage, a microorganism that is draining the sun's energy. As he gradually recovers his memory, he recalls that his mission is to investigate why the star Tau Ceti is resistant to Astrophage and to find a solution to save Earth before it freezes.
