Plot Overview
- Ryland Grace — wakes aboard the spaceship Hail Mary with complete amnesia, finding he is the sole survivor on a long mission. He gradually pieces together that Earth’s sun is dimming severely due to a microorganism called Astrophage which saps solar energy. Tau Ceti is one of the stars not yet affected.
- Mission setup — Grace was recruited against his will by Eva Stratt, who is leading the international effort to stop Astrophage's spread. His mission: travel to Tau Ceti to study why it’s immune, develop a solution, and send results back using unmanned probes because a return journey isn’t feasible.
- Rocky (alien engineer from Erid, 40 Eridani) — Grace encounters Rocky, an alien whose planet is also threatened. Though biologically and cognitively very different, they build trust and form a partnership based on science, communication, and mutual need. Grace names him “Rocky.”
- Discovery of Tau Ceti e (“Adrian”) and Taumoeba — On the planet orbiting Tau Ceti, Grace and Rocky discover a bacterium ("Taumoeba") that naturally preys on Astrophage. They work out how to collect, cultivate, and adapt it to combat Astrophage on both Earth and Rocky’s home.
- Major sacrifices — Grace learns that taumoeba can eventually penetrate xenonite, the primary material in Rocky’s ship, risking Rocky’s survival. Facing the choice between returning to Earth or saving his friend, Grace opts to help Rocky instead. He still sends back the probes with the fix for Earth.
- Ending — Grace ends up settling on Erid. Later, Earth implements the solution and stars recover. On Erid, Grace becomes part of Rocky’s community, teaching and helping rebuild. He’s offered the chance to go home but takes time to consider, having found purpose and belonging among the Eridians.
