Plot Outcome:
- The episode takes place in 2026, playing out the mystery set up in the pilot: who killed Hal Jordan and how John Stewart ended up where he is now. John is reluctant, emotionally distant, and disconnected from the hero role because of Rushville’s aftermath. - Hal Jordan has spent the last ten years in prison over the disaster that occurred in Rushville, and after being released, he returns to a town where everyone despises him. - John attends Hal’s funeral wearing a borrowed suit and delivers a eulogy Hal himself wrote in advance. Carol Ferris urges him to read it, telling John she thinks Hal admired him. - After the funeral, John digs up Hal's coffin at night, removes Hal’s Green Lantern ring, and puts it on his own finger. He summons the “Halogram” with the ring’s remaining power (just 5% charge). The Halogram looks into the coffin, prompting John’s emotional reaction: “Goddamnit.”
This ending deepens the central mystery: Hal Jordan is dead (as revealed in episode 1), the ring is now on John’s hand in 2026, and the investigation into what really happened is unresolved—setting the stage for the final episodes of Season 1.
