Here’s a plot recap of Lanterns (Season 1, 2026):
Plot Recap
The story begins in 1996 with young John Stewart watching a 60 Minutes interview where Hal Jordan—Earth’s first Green Lantern—describes revealing the Lantern Corps to the world by stopping a meteor attack, and how overcoming fear is central to his identity. We also see John’s father using fear to teach him lessons (shooting an apple off his head) to shape his resilience.
Jump to 2016: Hal Jordan is training John Stewart, who’s been chosen by the Guardians of the Universe as Hal’s eventual replacement. Part of the training includes a dangerous test when Hal jumps out of a moving car, leaving John to trust in the ring. John also receives a cryptic message from a backup consciousness of Hal stored within the ring: “There’s hail in Rushville, Nebraska.”
Hal and John head to Rushville, Nebraska, to investigate a mass shooting at a high school football game. The victims are all outsiders; none have families or clear ties to the town. Hal suspects alien involvement, and John discovers more strange signs—like a mysterious man in the crowd who turns out to be an alien with a biometric bomb in his body.
As they dig deeper, John learns more about his own background, Hal’s complicated relationship with the Guardians and his role as mentor, and the resistant town sheriff, Kerry Kane, who clashes with the Lanterns over jurisdiction and secrets.
Midseason, a figure called the Manhunter emerges in 2016—an alien threat hiding in Rushville. We learn identity reveals and betrayals, particularly involving characters connected to Sheriff Kane and a woman named Zoe, whose loyalties and backstory add layers to the conspiracy.
In Episode 5 (“Lights Out”), this churning conspiracy comes to a head: Zoe dies, relationships fracture, plans unravel. Hal attempts a risky strategy to lure aliens to the Macon ranch and capture Zoe on behalf of the Guardians. But Kerry Kane, ordered to kill Hal, instead fires—a decision that leads to disaster.
Then there’s the flash-forward: in 2026, John returns to Rushville to the same stadium where it all began. There he sees Hal Jordan, dead, frozen in the bleachers, without his ring. That moment becomes the central mystery: who killed Hal, why his ring is missing, and how all the events in 2016 lead up to this betrayal or tragedy.
Key Characters
- John Stewart — Hal Jordan’s chosen successor and a Green Lantern in training. 2. Hal Jordan — Veteran Green Lantern, nearing retirement, who mentors John and hides secrets. 3. Sheriff Kerry Kane — Local law enforcement in Rushville, suspicious of the Lanterns, caught between duty and personal history. 4. Zoe — A complicated ally/adversary whose relationships with John, Hal, and the Guardians are morally tangled. 5. Manhunter — Alien antagonist whose identity and motives are gradually revealed.
Themes & Stakes
- Power and fear: What it really means to wear the ring, to be brave in the face of cosmic and human threats. - Legacy and replacement: John’s journey toward being Hal’s heir, while Hal grapples with the weight of his role. - Mystery & betrayal: Earthbound crime meets intergalactic stakes; trust is fragile. - Time and consequences: How decisions made in 2016 echo into tragedy in 2026.
The central mystery of Lanterns is not whether Hal Jordan will die—it’s how he ends up dead, who is responsible, and what choices lead to that moment. Each episode gradually fills in the pieces between past and future, Earth and space, mentor and trainee.
