Mostly episodic with a serialized backbone.
Most episodes are standalone bounty-hunt stories (western/noir/comedy/horror mixes), so you can enjoy many installments on their own. However, recurring character arcs—especially Spike’s past with the Red Dragon (episodes like "Ballad of Fallen Angels," "Jupiter Jazz," "Sympathy for the Devil") and Faye/Jet/Ed’s personal backstories—slowly deepen across the series. Those threads culminate in a two-part, heavily serialized finale ("The Real Folk Blues"), so watching the series in order is best if you want the full emotional payoff. The 2001 movie is set during the series but isn’t required to understand the TV ending.
