Dr. Charlotte “Charly” McKenna lives an enviable life as a dermatologist in New York—with a thriving practice, a luxury apartment overlooking Central Park, and a loving husband—until one night, a bullet rips through the right side of her skull. She survives, but everything she once knew—her identity, her independenc…
As Charly fights through severe memory loss, physical dependency, and a neurological condition called hemispatial neglect—which makes her unaware of her left side—she starts reconstructing her past in bits and pieces. Through alternating “before” and “after” timelines, key figures emerge: her husband Clark—handsome, devoted, but deeply suspect; a private investigator she hires; and an angry former patient’s husband who may hold a grudge. Along the way, Charly forms connections with other patients in rehab, especially a man named Jamie, who becomes important to both her recovery and her understanding of what truly happened.
Clues point to Clark owning a life insurance policy on her life worth two million dollars, and several revelations cast doubt on his honesty—past job losses, secret sycophancy, and even lies about his past. As Charly’s memory returns, she learns Clark was implicated in planning her shooting alongside his friend Kyle Barry. On the night of the attack, Clark waited for Charly to die without calling for help—he only dialed 911 once a neighbor arrived unexpectedly.
In the book’s climax, Charly confronts Clark in rehab and refuses to sign power of attorney papers. He tries to kill her again by smothering her with a pillow. Jamie intervenes, saving Charly and exposing Clark’s plot. Kyle confesses fully to shooting her, and Clark is arrested and sentenced to prison. Ultimately, Charly returns home, undergoing successful surgery and slowly walking again with a cane. She’s one her way to rebuilding her professional life, and, after a year, she allows herself to reciprocate Jamie’s feelings—finding hope beyond betrayal and trauma.
