Dr. Charlotte “Charly” McKenna is a successful dermatologist with a perfect life—great career, beautiful apartment in NYC, and a devoted husband. Suddenly, her world is shattered when she’s shot through the right side of her skull and left with severe brain injury. As she recovers, Charly can’t remember who tried to…
The narrative alternates between two timelines: “Before” the shooting, showing her life with her husband Clark, subtle warning signs, and growing tensions; and “After,” where Charly is in rehab, battling her mind and body while trying to piece together clues about what happened that fateful night.
As her memory gradually returns—especially after six months—she recalls that Clark’s friend, Kyle Barry, was the actual shooter. Even more disturbing, Charly remembers that Clark, finding her still alive, delayed calling 911 until a neighbor saw him standing over her. Clark turns out to be the mastermind, having plotted the shooting with Kyle so he could gain Charly’s life insurance money and access hidden assets. When Charly refuses to sign over power of attorney, Clark tries to kill her again—this time by smothering her with a pillow. Jamie, another patient in rehab, intervenes and saves her.
In the ending, Kyle gives a full confession, Clark is arrested and sentenced to 12 years. Charly finally undergoes surgery to replace part of her skull and slowly recovers her independence. A year later she’s out of the hospital, walking with a cane, preparing to return to medicine. Her relationship with Jamie—who stood by her through her recovery—blossoms into something real.
