The creature terrorizing Snook’s Arm, nicknamed Mudder, is revealed to be an ancient female cephalopod trying to protect her eggs—which are frozen inside an iceberg that drifted too close to shore due to warming waters. Her increasingly aggressive behavior is driven by fear for her young.
-
The major antagonist beyond the creature is human greed: the Crocker family is pushing for the evacuation of Snook’s Arm so they can mine valuable minerals (cobalt and copper) beneath the land, using the sea creature and relocation vote as leverage.
-
In the finale, Calvin (Josh Hartnett) and marine biologist Fonda (Mackenzie Davis) convince the military not to bomb Mudder. Instead, they break apart and tow the iceberg—and its egg sac—out of the harbor into deeper, cooler waters to try to give her offspring a chance while minimizing risk to the townspeople.
-
Despite their efforts, none of the eggs hatch—because the ocean has already warmed too much. Mudder waits with her eggs out at sea, protects them until the natural, inevitable end.
-
Calvin earns a sort of redemption: he reconciles with his past trauma—particularly the guilt he carried over his father’s death—and improves his relationship with his son Wade. He also helps the town expose the Crockers’ plan.
-
The series closes with a bittersweet but cautiously hopeful scene. Calvin and Wade move out onto open water, see multiple icebergs emerging on the horizon. Calvin looks at them and utters, “Oh, shit.” The shot cuts to black. It’s a suggestion that while one crisis has ended, the underlying issues—climate change, ecological imbalance, and perhaps more creatures or surprises—are not done.
Final Take
The ending resolves the story’s immediate threats—Calvin saves the town, moves the creature’s nest, confronts human exploitation—and gives emotional closure for the main character. But it leaves open the larger, looming danger posed by environmental change. It works as a complete story while also foreshadowing that Snook’s Arm (and places like it) may face similar or worse threats in the near future.
