A marine biologist named Fonda Howander arrives to investigate unusual occurrences: underwater attacks, worsening symptoms among townspeople—like insatiable thirst and urges to walk into the sea—and icebergs that contaminate the drinking water.
The mysterious creature at the heart of it all is "Mudder," a deep-sea cephalopod whose egg sac is stuck in an iceberg. Mudder’s secretions are spreading via melting ice, infecting the water supply and causing the town’s bizarre symptoms.
Wade begins seeing a mythical figure, the "Old Hag," who turns out to be Maggie—daughter of Calvin’s childhood friend Walton. Maggie and Walton have a relationship with Mudder: they’ve been feeding the creature and protecting it in exchange for its marine bounty. Walton believes Mudder has marked Wade for Maggie, hinting at sinister future plans.
Calvin uncovers that much of the town's suffering stems from the powerful Crocker family, who control industries from fishing to mining. They orchestrated both the resettlement vote and environmental neglect, all while hiding a valuable mineral reserve beneath the land—one they want ceded cheaply.
In the climax, Calvin, Wade, Fonda, and several townsfolk avert an imminent airstrike aimed at killing Mudder (at the urging of the Crockers). Instead, Calvin and family manage to detach the iceberg containing Mudder’s eggs, pull it to deeper, safer waters, and protect Mudder’s unborn babies. The Crockers’ plan is exposed; Calvin finally feels freed from the guilt he carried from his father’s death.
The series ends on a mix of hope and warning: though Snook's Arm survives the immediate threat and Mudder is spared, new icebergs appear offshore—symbolizing climate change and the idea that greater threats lie ahead.
