Lowen discovers that Verity has written an unpublished autobiography called So Be It which makes disturbing confessions:
- Verity claims she tried to abort her pregnancies with twins and repeatedly attempted to harm them in infancy. - She admits to blaming one daughter, Harper, for the death of the other, Chastin, even going so far as to claim she caused Harper to drown by intentionally capsizing a canoe. - Verity also portrays herself as deeply obsessed with Jeremy and resentful of anyone she saw as rival for his attention.
Later, a letter from Verity buried under floorboards reverses many of these claims—she says So Be It was fiction written from the villain’s perspective, that she never harmed her children, and that Jeremy actually caused her car accident when he discovered the manuscript.
These revelations leave Lowen (and the reader) uncertain which version of Verity’s past is true.
