Here’s a full plot recap of The Terminal List Season 1 (2022):
Plot Recap
-
During a secret operation in Syria dubbed Operation Odin’s Sword, Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander James Reece leads Alpha Platoon into tunnels tasked with capturing Dr. Jahan Kahani, an Iranian-linked weapons scientist. Instead, the squad walks into a lethal ambush. Reece and fellow SEAL Ernest “Boozer” Vickers are the only survivors. Reece returns home with traumatic memory gaps.
-
Boozer dies under suspicious circumstances (ruled a suicide). Reece experiences headaches and strange neurological symptoms. While at a clinic for an MRI, assassins attack using a weapon identical to his own – hinting at foul play. He rushes home to find his wife Lauren and daughter Lucy brutally murdered, the scene staged as a home execution rather than random violence.
-
Reece discovers a cryptic experimental drug, RD-4895, was administered covertly to his entire platoon to prevent PTSD. The drug causes dangerous brain tumors. When these adverse effects emerge, those in power stage the Syrian ambush to eliminate both evidence and survivors.
-
Reece creates his “terminal list” by writing names on the back of one of Lucy’s drawings. The list targets everyone connected to the conspiracy: corrupt military officers, industry executives, investigators, the Secretary of Defense. With help from former SEAL and CIA operator Ben Edwards and investigative journalist Katie Buranek, Reece hunts and eliminates the culprits one by one.
-
Key takedowns include NCIS Agent Josh Holder (in collusion with Capstone), Capstone’s fixer Saul Agnon, broker Marcus Boykin, the cartel hit-team responsible for Lauren and Lucy’s deaths, and senior naval officers like Admiral Gerald Pillar and Captain Leonard Howard.
-
Reece confronts Defense Secretary Lorraine Hartley, who pushed RD-4895’s use without proper oversight. She orchestrated the ambush to protect her political ambitions when the drug trials caused tumor outbreaks. Hartley dies by suicide in her bunker as Reece breaches her estate.
-
The biggest betrayal comes from Ben Edwards: he sold out Reece and the rest of Alpha Platoon, facilitating the ambush. Reece tracks Edwards down on his sailboat, corners him, and kills him. With all names crossed off the terminal list, Reece escapes and sails toward Mozambique — alive but still severely weakened by the terminal tumor.
