Olive Smith, a biology PhD candidate focused on developing an early detection test for pancreatic cancer, impulsively kisses her best friend Anh’s crush—Guy X—just to prove she’s “moved on.” To her shock, that strangers turns out to be Dr. Adam Carlsen, a brilliant but harshly critical professor in her department.
Adam, facing pressure because the university has frozen his research funds over concern he might leave, makes Olive a deal: they’ll pretend to date so it looks like he’s settling down and thus worth investing in. Eventually, Olive realizes her feelings for Adam are real. Miscommunications, jealousy, and professional dangers threaten to tear them apart, but Olive makes a stand—both personally and professionally. In the end, the fake relationship dissolves into a genuine one, Olive finds a supportive academic path, and they choose to be together for real.
