The young American woman, Oriah “Ry” Pera, lives with a chronic genetic condition called tuberous sclerosis. This illness causes invasive growths (tuberous tumors) on her internal organs, including her brain. Initially, Ry refuses a risky brain surgery that could remove the tumors, because there’s a chance it would cost her her memories—or even her life. Her health deteriorates over the summer, and she experiences seizures—one severe seizure during the night forces a surgical decision. Ultimately, Ry does undergo the operation, and it is successful.
