Retired actor Benjamin “Basil” Basil, once famous for playing Sherlock Holmes, travels to a small hotel on a remote islet near Mallorca where he becomes stranded with other guests during a violent storm. The peace is shattered when Elisa Mander, an English tourist, is found dead—initially assumed to be suicide but swiftly revealed as murder.

The biggest twist: Vesper Dundas—the woman traveling with a friend—is not who she claims. She is actually Edith Mander, who switched identities with the real Vesper. Mander’s husband had been executed by Hans Klemmer during WWII, and she orchestrates the brutal, complex killings as revenge, mimicking detective stories in their staging.
Rather than turn her in, Basil, empathizing with her motivations, lets her escape. The finale leaves them in a silent mutual acknowledgment: he calls her “Mrs. Adler” and she calls him “Mr. Holmes”—echoing classic detective fiction’s morally ambiguous finale.
