Here’s how The Emperor’s Enemy resolves its main plot by the end of Book 1 (while setting up for Book 2):
Ending & Plot Resolution
- Zora Ravenal fulfills her mission to infiltrate the Draconis Empire’s weaponization plot by being assigned to spy on “Tarantula,” the Empire’s deadliest assassin, under the guise of being his magic student. - During the final confrontation, Tarantula is revealed to actually be Emperor Aleksander himself—using a double to pose as the assassin, altering his appearance to hide his true identity and scars. - Zora foils the Emperor’s plan to use the dragon Plague as he tries to fly her away by rigging the dragon’s scales with a target arrowhead connected to a Commonwealth missile. The missile strikes, destroying Plague and thwarting Aleksander’s escape. - In the aftermath, Zora and Aleksander fall together into the mud—bound physically (via chains or collar) and situationally (by the Emperor’s claim that Zora is his “syxzal,” a bonded soulmate). He vows that she will be bound to him forever. - Though major revelations occur—Zora’s true nature (she died young and was reborn by the forest god Barren as a Keeper of the Forest), the Emperor’s obsession, and her unexpected storm magic—the war is still raging and their bond unresolved. The ending stops just as Zora delivers her “checkmate”—destroying the dragon and exposing the Emperor—but Aleksander lives, and their power dynamics and emotional conflict remain open.
What’s Settled vs What Remains
- Settled: Zora has revealed her power and identity; the Emperor’s disguise and scheme are exposed; Tarantula’s true identity is unmasked; the dragon weapon is destroyed; Zora’s mission successfully disrupts the Empire’s leverage over her population. - Open: The war continues; the fate of the bonded relationship (syxzal) is unresolved; Aleksander survives and remains a threat; Zora’s internal struggle with her dual identity and magic remains complicated; much of the larger magical and political world remains only partly explained.
The ending delivers major twists and upends the status quo—it’s triumphant for Zora in many ways, but deliberately incomplete as the first part of a duo.
