Possible Love interweaves the lives of two married couples from markedly different social classes and asks how love survives in a world rattled by economic instability.
Plot Recap:
Ho-seok, a factory welder, was laid off two years ago when his company underwent a harsh restructuring and strike repression. The loss shatters not just his income, but his sense of identity. He withdraws, burdened by shame and alienation, while his wife Mi-ok works at a mask plant and tries to keep their household — including their ten-year-old son — intact. Meanwhile, Ye-ji, a documentary filmmaker from an affluent background, sets out to chronicle the stories of laid-off workers. She meets Mi-ok and Ho-seok at a funeral for one of Ho-seok’s former colleagues. Ye-ji’s husband Sang-woo, wealthy and somewhat emotionally distant, is part of this upper-class world.
Ye-ji persuades Mi-ok to allow her and Sang-woo to document the couple’s life. Over time, casual interactions — home and work visits, interviews, and shared spaces including a vacation at Sang-woo’s coast-front villa — bring the couples into closer proximity. Emotional tensions simmer as class divides, hidden envies, and unspoken desires begin to strain the relationships. Mi-ok grows closer to Ye-ji, and finds herself unsettled by a growing attraction toward Sang-woo.
Talk of love in its many forms surfaces: not just romantic or sexual, but familial, ethical, and socio-economic. Ho-seok’s internal crisis and Mi-ok’s resilience contrast starkly with Ye-ji’s ambition and Sang-woo’s detachment.
