Here’s what kicks off the chase in Lucky Season 1, Episode 1 (“No Shortcuts”):
What starts the chase
- Flash-forward setup — The episode opens with Lucky being chased down by an FBI agent across a parking lot filled with semi-trucks; she’s cornered and it seems her capture is inevitable. 2. Big heist & betrayal — We then go back to about twelve hours earlier where Lucky and her husband Cary have just pulled off a heist and are celebrating in a Vegas hotel with a suitcase full of cash. Lucky has uneasy feelings about the plan even as Cary tries to reassure her. 3. He wakes up without memory, money, or husband — Lucky wakes up the next morning hungover; Cary is gone and the cash has vanished with him. 4. The law closes in — The FBI and casino security swiftly become aware of Lucky and Cary’s theft of around $10 million in government money. Agent Billie Rand orders agents to capture them alive. Lucky’s face starts showing up in news reports. Her attempt to leave the hotel fails as she’s spotted; agents check every exit. 5. Criminal threat joins in — It’s not just the FBI she has to evade. A man in a leather jacket, later identified as Dutch (an enforcer for crime boss Priscilla, who also happens to be Cary’s mother), starts pursuing her, raising the stakes significantly.
In short: the chase kicks off when Lucky wakes up alone and betrayed after the heist—Cary and the money are gone. Then federal agents and dangerous criminals who want her dead (or at least under their control) start closing in, forcing Lucky into survival mode.
