Maya is a 26-year-old Boston ER nurse who builds her life around work, avoids romance, and believes the world is too fragile for long-term plans. That changes when she meets Charlie, a charming, sociable PhD student, during a small transaction—she buys a side table from him—and their relationship ignites quickly. De…

Their happiness is cut short by the arrival of COVID-19. As cases swell, Maya’s ER is overwhelmed. Charlie, who has asthma, contracts the virus. He insists on staying with Maya, even as she urges him to go somewhere safer. When his condition worsens, Maya can’t be with him in the hospital, and she has to bid farewell to him via FaceTime. Charlie dies, leaving Maya emotionally shattered and burdened with guilt—not just over his death, but over how she withdrew afterward from friends and Charlie’s mother, Ruth, who blames Maya for her son’s death.

In the wake of this loss, Maya abandons her old life. She disappears—leaves her job, her relationships—and embarks on years of travel: living in Lisbon, London, and Tokyo. She numbs her grief with casual hookups, heavy drinking, and emotional distance. Along the way she meets Felix, a single father who’s kind and open, and who shares his own loss; for a time it seems like he might be her chance at a new life.

But Maya eventually realizes she can’t build a future as long as she’s still running from her grief and avoiding confronting her past. She leaves Felix—not because he’s wrong for her, but because she’s not yet ready to fully embrace a relationship without carrying Charlie’s memory hidden. She returns to the U.S., reconnects with her friend Jason and finally faces Ruth. In a raw, emotional encounter in Ruth’s Cape Cod home, Maya and Ruth don’t erase the pain of the past—but they acknowledge it together. Maya comes to see that grief won’t ever disappear, but she can carry it without letting it define her. The film ends on a bittersweet, hopeful note: Maya beginning to live again, not by replacing her past, but by integrating it into her changed self.
