In Inception, limbo is a deep subconscious space of raw, unconstructed dream reality. It is an unformed dream world where dreamers can become trapped if they die while in a dream that is already a dream within a dream (a dream at a deeper level). Because time moves much slower in dreams, extended time spent in limbo…
Dreamers get stuck in limbo if they die in a dream layer while under sedation during a multi-level dream. Instead of waking up, their consciousness falls into limbo, where they can lose track of reality and become trapped indefinitely. Cobb and Mal once got stuck in limbo for decades, which led to Mal's psychological breakdown when they returned to waking life.
Escaping limbo requires either waking up through external intervention or consciously realizing it is a dream and choosing to leave. Cobb's team uses shared dreaming and sedatives to navigate and avoid limbo, but it remains a dangerous risk of deep dream infiltration.
