Here’s what From has revealed so far about why people can’t leave the town (sometimes called “Fromville” in recaps):
The Rules That Trap Them
-
The Infinite Loop Roads When newcomers try to drive or walk out, the roads always lead them back into town. Any attempt at escape via car or by foot ends up looping back.
-
The Forest and Highway Detours A fallen tree or broken highway forces detours that trap travelers—even directionally aware drivers end up circling back. It’s as though the roads themselves have been manipulated.
-
Strict Night Rules & Dangerous Creatures After sunset, the town becomes lethal. Monstrous creatures emerge from the surrounding forest. Residents absolutely must stay inside, lock themselves away, and use talismans to block creatures from entering buildings. One mistake—an open door or window—can be fatal.
-
Talismans & Protective Boundaries Talismans repel the Creatures, but only if placed properly. Structures are safe only when enclosed, occupied, and secured. Any opening compromises the protection. The Creatures adhere to these boundaries.
Why Those Rules Exist (Hints & Theories)
- The town seems designed to force residents to stay, both physically (through loops and forest barriers) and behaviorally (through rules about staying indoors and respecting talisman protocols). - The Creatures are bound by a system: they can’t cross certain boundaries like daylight, talismans, and occupied enclosed places unless invited. This suggests some supernatural architecture enforcing the confinement.
Known Exceptions or Unclear Loopholes
- There’s at least one moment with Tabitha waking up in a hospital after falling from a tower—whether that’s true escape or illusion isn’t confirmed. - Children (like the “Boy in White”) may access strange portals or forest anomalies. These suggest escape might be possible via nonstandard means—not roads or paths.
In short: people can’t leave because supernatural forces have rigged the town’s geography (roads always returning) and established unbreakable rules enforced by the Creatures (night vulnerability, invitation rules, talismans). There may be extremely rare exceptions, but nothing has clearly broken those rules yet. Sources below.
