Here’s how the portal to Nakali works in Forgotten Island:
How the Portal Works
-
Magical Sand Dollar Key: The portal is tied to a particular sand dollar found on the beach. Jo has grown up hearing stories about Nakali from her grandmother (Lola Fatima), and that connection makes the sand dollar a “key” that responds to her belief and memories, opening the portal.
-
Belief & Memory Activation: The portal only activates because Jo has a deep emotional tie to Nakali through her grandmother’s stories—the island becomes real through belief and memory.
-
Cost of Using It: Entering and attempting to return through the portal comes with a cost: visitors risk losing memories of their friendship and past if they try to use magical aid to get home too easily. Batiba, a creature on Nakali, offers to send them home—but only in exchange for giving up their charm bracelets, sacred physical tokens of their shared memories.
-
Transformation & Time Distortion: When Raissa and Jo arrive in Nakali, time has passed without their awareness, and Raissa has gained physical changes—wings and loss of half her hair—which reflect their magical journey and the portal’s destabilizing effects on identity and memory.
-
Opening & Re-opening the Portal: The portal is opened by using the sand dollar at a specific place (the beach) and at a specific moment (their last night together before parting ways). Later, the charm bracelets—objects deeply meaningful to Jo and Raissa—play a role in reactivating or accessing the portal again.
The portal functions not just as a doorway between worlds, but as a mechanism bound to belief, memory, and emotional history—using magical objects that are powerful because of what Jo and Raissa feel and remember.
