What happens in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?
Here’s what happens in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Season 1):
Plot Recap
David Martinez, a poor student living in Night City, loses his mother, Gloria, in a random drive-by shooting after being denied Trauma Team medical care he couldn’t afford. Desperate, he installs a stolen military-grade Sandevistan — a cyberware implant granting super-speed — which leads to his expulsion from Arasaka Academy.
He meets Lucy, a skilled netrunner with dreams of escaping to the Moon. She introduces him to Maine’s crew: Dorio, Rebecca, Pilar, Kiwi, Falco and others. David joins them as they take on dangerous jobs, targeting the Arasaka Corporation with help from the fixer Faraday.
David shows unusually high tolerance for cyberware, but this pushes him toward cyberpsychosis — a mental collapse caused by too much augmentation. Maine, his mentor, exhibits symptoms, leading to tragic consequences.
During their missions, Lucy’s secret mission emerges: she has been protecting David from Arasaka’s experimental Cyberskeleton project — they aim to use him as a test subject. Betrayals, especially from Faraday and Kiwi, force David into a situation where he must deploy the Cyberskeleton to save Lucy.
In the climactic battle, David, severely stricken by cyberpsychosis and running out of immunoblockers, sacrifices everything to rescue Lucy. He holds off Adam Smasher — Arasaka’s fully cybernetic enforcer — instructs Rebecca to get Lucy out, and is ultimately killed. Lucy escapes to fulfill her dream of going to the Moon, but David isn’t there with her.
Themes & Notable Elements
- Human cost of augmentation: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners emphasizes the psychological and physical toll of cyberware, especially through cyberpsychosis. - Corruption and corporate control: Arasaka, Militech, and the fixer system illustrate how corporations manipulate individuals and lives. - Love & sacrifice: The relationship between David and Lucy is central — David fights to protect her even at the ultimate cost. - Dreams vs. reality: Lucy’s dream of escaping to the Moon contrasts with the brutal reality of their lives in Night City.
Setting & Context
Set between 2075–2076, the series is a self-contained story in the Cyberpunk universe, prior to the events of the Cyberpunk 2077 game. It explores Night City’s dark underbelly — gang violence, body modifications, inequality — all under the looming influence of powerful mega-corporations.
Ending Summary: David’s journey ends in tragedy. He gains power and fame as an edgerunner but becomes consumed by what he was fighting against. Lucy escapes his fate by making it to the Moon alone, haunted by his loss.
